WQCS Now Transmitting in Digital “HD Radio”

WQCS, 88.9 FM, is now sending a digital signal as well as an analog signal to the Treasure Coast.  To receive the digital signal, you will need a new “HD Radio” digital receiver.  The radios are being made available in new automobiles and at electronics retail outlets.

“HD Radio” allows WQCS to send a digital signal that is broadcast alongside the 88.9 FM analog signal that all FM radios currently receive.  The digital signal is unaffected by atmospheric conditions that may distort analog signals and creates a CD-quality sound on “HD Radio” receivers.   The new digital receivers also will continue to receive the analog signals of stations not airing digital signals.

WQCS and other FM stations will continue to broadcast the analog signals for many years so that current radio sets will not become obsolete.

The installation of an HD Radio transmission transmitter means that the station is able to utilize digital audio throughout the station to provide the highest quality audio to listeners.  WQCS also plans to expand its service over the next few months by creating new digital channels for additional “HD Radio” programming.

The station continues to upgrade its technology and plans to install a new antenna within the next few months.

FCC Guidelines

Because of the non-commercial status of public radio stations, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has guidelines for underwriting announcements, in particular, requiring that they not be promotional in nature. They cannot contain comparative or qualitative descriptions of products or services, price information, including interest rates, inducements to buy, sell, rent or lease, or other calls to action. Messages must be value neutral.
