Fort Pierce - Friday October 7, 2022: This week on In Focus with IRSC Public Media, a conversation with Susan Mehiel, the communications officer for the Alliance for Safe Trains.
The Alliance has launched a petition drive to postpone Brightline’s plans to start testing its trains at 110 MPH through Martin and St. Lucie Counties. The testing is scheduled to begin Monday October 17.

The Alliance wants assurances that everything possible has been done to ensure that its safe to run trains at that speed through the Treasure Coast.

Then we'll turn to the Florida’s Home insurance market after Hurricane Ian. We spoke with Mark Friedlander, the Communications Director for the Insurance Information Institute. The Institute projects that Ian will end up being the second-largest property loss event in U.S. history, with more than $60 million dollars in losses.

Florida’s home insurance market was already in crisis before the hurricane and its in worse shape now. Friedlander expects to see more insures go bankrupt and worst of all, home insurance rates in Florida are likely to surge again next year, possible by as much as 40%.
