Florida - Tuesday May 10, 2022: The National Hurricane Center Tuesday reports that the first tropical wave of 2022 has weakened as it moves west away from the African coast into the Atlantic.

It was first detected Sunday. By Monday afternoon the National Hurricane Center reported it had steadily weakened, and that trend was continuing Tuesday morning.

A post on the NHC website Tuesday morning reports that the "tropical wave extends from the Equator to 19N, with an axis along 27W." It was moving west at 15 knots. "Convection associated with this wave is scattered and weak," states the NHC. Convection results from temperature differences in various atmospheric layers which can generate rapid up-flows of warm air while cooler air flows downward. Such movement can develop into circulation.

The official start of the Hurricane Season is on June 1st. The first named tropical storm will be called Alex.
