Vero Beach - Wednesday March 1, 2023: The Vero Beach Police Department (VBPD) reports that a five day search for a stray German Shepard finally ended Tuesday with the recovery of the dog on an Indian River Lagoon spoil island.

The dog was seen swimming to the island last Friday, February 24. Police were notified but a 4-hour search on Saturday was unable to locate the dog. A large dog trap was set Monday, food and water were laid in as bait.

Then on Tuesday a local marine store owner was out on the water in his boat when he decided to check in on the dog trap about 11 a.m. February 28. He found the German Shepherd secured in the trap and told police.

In a release, the Vero Beach Police Department says the dog has been taken to the Humane Society for observation. It is not known who the owner is or what prompted the dog to swim out to the spoil island.
