This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about the recent Indian River Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Gifford Middle School. Budding scientists and engineers grades K through 12 displayed 421 projects. The four exhibits judged Best in Show addressed these questions: On which surface will a Lego car go down a ramp the fastest? Answer: Non-stick foil. Does the distance you shoot an arrow affect how deeply it goes into a foam target? Yes, but closer does not necessarily mean deeper. Can any current technology detect planets outside our solar system orbiting a black hole? Yes. Does the ocean’s pH level have an impact on the growth and color of shrimp? Yes. Another Question: Is being good at science and math becoming cool? Yes! I’m Paul Janensch.
