Indian River State College has launched the IRSC Promise Program. The College is promising to provide tuition free Associate degrees to qualifying students who graduate this year from any public school in Martin, Okeechobee, Indian River, or St. Lucie Counties.
IRSC President Dr. Timothy Moore made the announcement at Fort Pierce Central High School Thursday morning.
“Indian River State College is now making a challenge to you," he told a crowded auditorium full of senior students, their teachers and administrators, "if you enroll full time in our state college in the fall of 2022 we will wave your tuition."
The cost of higher education at many colleges and universities across the country is beyond reach for many high school graduates. The IRSC Promise program is the college’s commitment to eliminating that barrier.
"Some of you know where you’ll be a year from now, but some of you don’t know because for some it’s just a dream," said St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent Wayne Gent. "Well today you’re going to find out that if you make a promise and you keep a promise, that dream can become a reality for you. This is the real deal.”
The Promise Program requires students to make a promise as well. 2022 graduates from a Treasure Coast public high school must commit to enroll this coming fall at IRSC full time, and they must maintain a 2.0 Grade Point Average each semester through completion of their chosen degree.
“Life is uncertain," said Dr. Moore, "but the one thing you’ll get out of an education ladies and gentlemen is this: What you learn can never be taken from you. The degree doesn’t make you. You make the degree. You will set your course, you will build your brand, and you will excite, and grow, and be passionate, and do great things, and change this world for the better.”
