Endangered Fishes of the St. Sebastian River

Endangered Fishes of the St. Sebastian River

There are several indigenous tropical freshwater fishes that are only found from Miami-Dade to southern Brevard County in the United States. Dr. Grant Gilmore, Senior Research Scientist of Estuarine Coastal and Ocean Science (ECOS) will give a presentation at the Friends of St. Sebastian River this month on these rare and endangered fishes and efforts to help protect them.

“I and my colleagues have been studying them since they were first captured in the 1940s. Their numbers have been declining due to habitat loss and poor water quality. Through the efforts of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, regional conservation groups, and concerned citizens, we think we can save these rare fish from extinction.”

The meeting is Tuesday, March 28, 6pm at the North Indian River County Library, 1001 Sebastian Blvd. in Sebastian and is free and all are welcome to attend. For more information, please visit our website at www.fssr.org or call 772-202-0501.
