THE TURNAWAY PLAY by Lesley Lisa Greene, presented by the Initiative for Reproductive Justice Group and hosted at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach, will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.How does getting an abortion or not influence a woman’s life? What happens when a woman is denied an abortion? The Turnaway Play is inspired by the groundbreaking Turnaway Study, conducted by Dr. Diana Greene Foster, a 2023 MacArthur Fellow and researcher at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Foster followed 1,000 women across the country for five years, producing the first scientific data on the consequences individuals face when they receive or are denied an abortion.Characters in The Turnaway Play are based on Turnaway Study participants and members of the research team. This urgent issue comes to life on stage through a blend of humor, drama, and audience participation.“The Turnaway Play has the potential to do for abortion what The Vagina Monologues did for vaginas.” — Vienna Farlow, reproductive health practitionerThe Turnaway Play has been presented in more than 22 states. It’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book, an astonishing set and a score that’s out of this Netherworld, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under, to be exact), it’s a remarkably touching show about family, love, and making the most of every Day-O!
