Funding a Clean Energy Future and More Than Just a Zoo

Doug Coward, Executive Director of the Solar and Energy Loan Fund (SELF); and Keith Winsten, Executive Director of the East Coast Zoological Society

Fort Pierce - Friday January 27, 2023: This week on In Focus, with IRSC Public Media, Doug Coward, Executive Director of the Solar and Energy Loan Fund known as SELF.

It's the first local non-profit green bank, founded back in 2010 right here in St. Lucie County.

SELF is now celebrating $30-million in loans which have financed energy efficient improvements for home owners based on their ability to pay, not on their credit scores. Coward founded the bank and he is now directing a nationwide expansion of SELF.

Then we speak with Keith Winsten, the Executive Director of the East Coast Zoological Society, the legal name for the nationally recognized Brevard Zoo. The Society is deeply involved in wildlife and environmental preservation efforts beyond the zoo, including helping to restore the Indian River Lagoon.

Keith will also tell us about the aquarium the Society is planning to build in Port Canaveral. Fund raising is well underway and its hoped ground will be broken on the project next year, with an grand opening planned in 2027.
