Tue Jan 30, 2018 SUPER-BLUE-BLOOD MOON SILLINESS, TCAS MEET
The moon is full tonight and tomorrow, and as this is the second full moon of the month, it’s often called a blue moon. The moon won’t actually be blue in color, but since this only happens on average once every 2.7 years, it’s kind of rare – once in a blue moon, you might say. The moon’s also near perigee, and on top of that, about ten minutes or so before the moon sets tomorrow morning, around the time of sunrise, people with an absolutely clear view toward the west horizon might catch the beginning of a lunar eclipse. The media are calling this event, the super-blue-blood moon, and the scientific description for this phenomenon can best be described as overhyped. Well, if you have an interest in the moon or anything else astronomical, stop by Indian River State College’s Science Center in Fort Pierce this evening at 7:30 pm, for a meeting of the Treasure Coast Astronomical Society – the public is welcome at these meetings.
