Blowing up old munitions

This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about blowing up explosives in the Atlantic a mile and a half out from southern Indian River County.  Everything went well, thank goodness.  The detonation of nine devices by federal contractors occurred on August 25 and 26.  They set up a restricted zone around the detonation area.  No boats allowed inside.  The bombs and other munitions were left over from World War II when the coast from Vero Beach to Jensen Beach was a training ground for the Navy’s underwater demolition teams, or “frog men,” the precursors of the SEALS.  The UDT-SEAL Museum north of Fort Pierce tells their story.  From time to time, pieces of lost ordnance are found along the coast.  If you see one, don’t touch it.  It could be live.  Remember the three R’s – Recognize, Retreat and Report.  I’m Paul Janensch.
