This is Paul Janensch with a Treasure Coast Essay about a mansion in Fort Pierce that may or may not be haunted. Very appropriate for Halloween. The imposing, Spanish-style structure on U.S. 1 north of 25th Street was built in the 1920s as a private residence. I’ve driven by it scores of times. People say it evolved into a bar, a gambling casino and a bordello. A man visiting the bordello was shot to death by his wife on the stairway. His ghost stayed as a resident. Or so the story goes. The St. Lucie County Historical Society says the legend is poppycock. Eventually, the building became the Treasure Coast Antique Mall, which is now closed. If a wayward husband was killed there and continues to haunt the place, could we call him the Treasure Ghost? Sorry. Couldn’t resist. I’m Paul Janensch.
