Titusville-April 1, 2022: Governor DeSantis has signed a measure into law that offers recruitment and retention incentives to both in-and-out of state residents who pursue a career in law enforcement in Florida. Among other provisions, House Bill 3 provides a $5,000 signing bonus for new recruits from in state as well as for qualified law enforcement officers from out of state.

“If you are somebody that is starting out or somebody who is transferring in we wanna show that we support what you’re doing and you will be able to get a $5,000 recruitment bonus,” said DeSantis during a signing ceremony Friday at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in Titusville.

“It’s a game changer for law enforcement in the state of Florida," said Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivy, "it’s a game changer for law enforcement officers outside the state of Florida. They’re being not only recruited and asked to come do their jobs, but when they get here they’re going to be allowed to do their jobs.”

The new law also covers up to $1,000 in tuition and fees for eligible education expenses for trainees and equivalency reimbursement of up to $1,000 for certification costs for out of state law enforcement recruits.

In addition the bill makes dependent children of law enforcement officers eligible to receive a Family Empowerment Scholarship to attend private schools and provides law enforcement officers who adopt a child from within the state with a $10,000 benefit or a $25,000 benefit for adopting a child with special needs.
