St. Lucie County - Wednesday August 10, 2022: The Florida Department of Transportation has successfully completed safety improvements at the intersection of State Road 70 (Okeechobee Road) and Midway Road near the entrance to the St. Lucie County fairgrounds.

To mark the occasion the St. Lucie County Commissioners celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon held inside the Anderson Emergency Operations Center to avoid the weather.

Its been known as a dangerous intersection where several fatal accidents have occurred in recent years. The most notorious accident happened back in March of 2012.

The driver of a school bus carrying 30 students from Francis K Sweet Elementary turned left in front of a tractor-trailer that slammed into the side of the bus. Nine-year-old Aaron Beauchamp was killed and many other students on the bus suffered injuries. And in 2018 there was a head-on collision that killed two local teenagers.

The Commissioners lobbied state transportation officials hard to make necessary safety improvements which are now in place including a new traffic signal and additional roadway lighting.
