Sailor from Port Saint Lucie Carried the Navy Flag at the Super Bowl

U.S. Navy

Port St. Lucie - Monday February 13, 2023: Petty Officer 3rd Class Shyeed Crooks of Port Saint Lucie carried the Navy flag with the Joint Armed Forces Color Guard during Super Bowl LVII Sunday in Phoenix.

Founded in 1931, the Ceremonial Guard is the Navy’s official ceremonial unit and represents the Navy in ceremonies supporting the President, the Secretary of Defense, the Navy. Their highest honor is paying respects and conducting all funerals for Navy personnel at Arlington National Cemetery.

Crooks is originally from Jamaica. He grew up in Lionel Town and attended high school at Jamaica College High School where he graduated in 2010.

Crooks says he joined the U.S. Navy because he wanted to be "a part of something bigger than myself and serve alongside people who feel the same about protecting what is important to them from harm."

Crooks joined the Navy two years ago. He now serves with the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard. “Everyone is valuable and has a part to play in a community as well as in a military team,” said Crooks.

Crooks continues to train and perform missions and says he has a great deal of pride serving in the Navy. “I have proven to myself and my command that I am reliable, confident, and capable of performing the tasks and responsibilities assigned to me."
