St. Lucie County - Friday August 5, 2022: St. Lucie County was recently awarded a $1.27 million grant from the Florida Boating Improvement Program to renovate and expand the North Causeway Island Park, representing the largest grant using state funds ever awarded by the agency.

With help from the lobbying team of 'GrayRobinson Government Affairs', St. Lucie County’s Parks & Recreation staff was awarded the $1.27 million grant through the Florida Boating Improvement Program (FBIP), which falls under the Boating and Waterways Section of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Renovations to the coastal park and boat ramp include replacing and expanding the existing boat ramp and parking area, creating a safer and ADA-accessible boat launch with additional trailer and ADA trailer parking spaces. Additional upgrades include newer restroom facilities, pavilions, picnic tables, a kayak/canoe launch area, lighting and upgraded stormwater/utilities. Parking will be expanded from 30 paved boat trailer and 10 car parking spaces to 62 paved boat trailer and 19 car parking spaces.

Designs and permitting have already been completed for this project. St. Lucie County plans to solicit bids from contractors soon and work is expected to begin in October. St. Lucie County Parks & Recreation hopes to keep the park open as much as possible during the renovation process; however, the site may need to temporarily close for various phases during the six-month project.

Managed by St. Lucie County’s Parks & Recreation Department, North Causeway Island Park is located at 500 North Causeway on North Hutchinson Island.
