The City of Fort Pierce has joined a statewide effort this week to help educate residents about the importance of preparing for the possibility of flooding and the benefits of flood insurance during Flood Awareness Week.

'Florida Flood Awareness Week' runs from March 7th through March 11th. Throughout this week Fort Pierce residents can learn about flood risks and prevention on the City's social media pages or by visiting the City's website at - www.cityoffortpierce.com .

Flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster that occurs throughout the U.S. and the Treasure Coast is no stranger to flooding events. The spring and summer months bring seasonal storms and those storms often cause significant amounts of flooding and damage to homeowners’ property.

The City of Fort Pierce’s Building Department encourages its residents to become “FLOOD READY.” “Flood Ready” is about being prepared and knowing the risks associated with flooding.

* Have a plan in place in case of a storm, flood, or disaster
* Have an emergency kit ready to go
* Get flood insurance to protect your home
* Know the flood risks in your area by educating yourself and your family during ‘Flood Awareness Week.’

These vital steps can minimize personal and financial loss and help you become “Flood Ready.”
