ST. LUCIE COUNTY, March 21, 2022: – St. Lucie County’s Animal Safety Division is now operating its own animal shelter off Midway Road.
Animals impounded by St. Lucie County’s Animal Safety staff will be temporarily housed at the county’s new shelter, located behind the Midway Veterinary Hospital at 3404 West Midway Road, while they attempt to reconnect lost pets with their owners. The animals will be held at the facility on a five-day stray hold before being transferred to various partnering rescues or adoption facilities. St. Lucie County purchased the three-acre site in December and has been making renovations to the facilities to better accommodate staff, surrendered animals and the general public. The shelter features 40 indoor kennels and outdoor exercise areas with plans to add 24 additional kennels in the future with extra outdoor exercise areas.
Dr. Brett Adams will continue to operate his veterinarian practice, leasing space from St. Lucie County, while also providing medical services to the county’s shelter. St. Lucie County staff has spent the past few months adding additional fencing, making ADA improvements and removing invasive plants. Plans are underway to add landscaping to the property.
The shelter lobby will be open by appointment for the public to pick up their lost pets, surrender animals or register their pets with the county.
The public hours will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The facility will be closed daily from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.. Residents wanting to reclaim or surrender their pets are should contact the Animal Safety Division during normal business hours.
