Treasure Coast - Wednesday July 27, 2022: The Society for Science has awarded a $5,000 STEM Action Grant to the community-based STEM organization, Treasure Coast Girls Coalition (TCGC) in Vero Beach.

The Treasure Coast Girls Coalition is cited for the way it is reengineering the way STEM is taught in Indian River County. The grant notification from the Society for Science states that TCGC is expanding access, fostering a sense of belonging and building resilience in marginalized girls from ages 9-18 through enhanced curricula, digital technology and emotional intelligence training.

“We believe in taking action with urgency in order to raise public awareness about some of the most pressing issues facing young women," said Treasure Coast Executive Director Shala Edwards. " With the support and funding resources from the STEM Action Grant, we are able to expand educational opportunities, participate in summer camps and host student retreats for our girls.”

A key component of TCGC is their belief in taking a proactive and collaborative approach to mitigate students’ trauma and toxic stress, such as that caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, through safety, structure and emotional support. A $5,000 grant will help the program scale student educational opportunities, from participation in summer camps to student retreats, emotional support and advocacy.

The Treasure Coast Girls Coalition is one of 45 grassroots organizations receiving a Society of Science grant this year.

In all the Society of Science has given out $176,000 in grants this year through its STEM Action Grant program, including four special Presidential Awards.

This year’s class of grantees represents one that is fiercely committed to diversity and mobility in STEM. They are ensuring that underserved and marginalized communities have opportunities in science and engineering using a variety of approaches and outreach efforts.
