Port St. Lucie - Tuesday August 30, 2022: The City’s new waste collection program begins next week and includes changes to the way bulk waste – individual items too big to fit into a cart – will be picked up for disposal.
The new program begins the week of Sept. 5, with the City’s new waste hauler, FCC Environmental Services Florida.
Large items such as discarded furniture, mattresses, carpets and small appliances will be collected curbside once a month on the same day as the residents’ designated collection day for garbage, recycling and yard waste.
These piles must be limited to 2 cubic yards, which is about the size of two front-load washing machines or two standard ovens.
Bulk items should be placed near the same location where the garbage and recycle cart is collected no later than 7 a.m. on the day of bulk collection service, but no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before collection.
To ensure the garbage and recycling carts can still be collected, the bulk waste pile should have a clearance of three (3) feet on each side. To help the City’s new waste hauler, residents are asked to avoid placing bulk items near obstructions such as trees, powerlines, mailboxes or automobiles.
Examples of neatly placed bulk items include, but are not limited to:
• Furniture
• Mattresses and carpets and other large household items
• Large and small appliances such as dishwashers, laundry machines and stoves
• Mirrors, glass, glass tabletops, windowpanes and plate glass (Items should be safely placed in a rigid container to facilitate safe collection.)
• Broken-down boxes, barrels and crates
• Disassembled basketball equipment and swing sets
Bulk items do not include contractor-generated material. If items placed curbside do not meet the bulk waste collection criteria, then an educational notice will be placed on the pile with instructions on how to correct the issue. If the issue is not corrected, after the initial grace period, code compliance may get involved.
The City has negotiated an $18.50 cubic yard rate for pickup and disposal for these additional collections.
The schedule for this once-a-month bulk waste collection, which is part of residents’ regular service, is now available at: www.CityofPSL.com/SolidWaste.
Residents who need an additional bulk waste pick up can schedule one by calling 1PSL at 772-871-1775, or residents can use a hauler of their choice and schedule a pickup.
Another option for residents wishing to dispose of bulk waste is to take it to the City’s Drop-Off site at the corner of Cameo Boulevard and Crosstown Parkway. Disposal at that location is free of charge.
These new procedures are aimed at keeping PSL clean and beautiful and to eliminate unsightly piles of large items in neighborhoods.
