Fort Pierce - Wednesday October 12, 2022: The City of Fort Pierce has re-opened the former Sunrise Humane Society animal shelter and re-named it the Fort Pierce Animal Adoption Center.

Earlier this month the City Commission terminated its contract with Sunrise, a non-profit which struggled financially trying to maintain the facility.

Now, under City management, the shelter is offering new services and hours of operation at the same location, at 100 Savannah Road in Fort Pierce.

The new hours of operation are Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM to 4 PM; Tuesdays through Thursdays from 11 AM to 4 PM; and Fridays from 11 AM to 5 PM. The facility is closed on Mondays.

There is an open-kennel walk-through for dogs and cats are now in a new spacious building, allowing them to roam free in a living room-style environment that has a separate ventilation system to keep them healthy and entertained.  In addition the shelter now offers second feedings.

"I am very excited to see the city step in and help make the lives of these animals better," said kennel technician Gabi Montgomery. "We are here to provide as much care as possible and help them find a forever home. "

Anyone interested in adoption is welcome to walk through the open-kennel area, accompanied by a staff member, and select a pet for adoption. Appointments are still encouraged for animal-to-new owner meetings.

The City of Fort Pierce thanked the local veterinarians who provided much-needed veterinary care to the dogs and cats at the shelter, and to Midway Veterinary Hospital, Tri-County/VCA, Rescue Adoption, Savannah Animal Hospital, Guardian Veterinarian Medical Center, and the Animal Medical Hospital for providing assistance and working on future aid for the shelter.
