Indian River County - Friday November 4, 2022: An investigation by the Indian River County Sheriff's Office has led to the arrest of an inmate and his girlfriend on allegations that they conspired to smuggle drugs into the jail.
According to a release from the Sheriff, new technology used to screen incoming mail detected "drug-infused paper" in mail addressed to inmate Alexander McKay.
IRCS Detectives sent the mail to a local crime lab where it tested positive for MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy. Fingerprints recovered from the drug-infused mail led to the positive identification of Christine Ammon, McKay's girlfriend.
McKay has pending felony drug charges in other counties, and he was already in the IRC jail on charges of grand theft auto and uttering a forged instrument. Now he is facing additional charges of:
- 1 count of Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Communications Device
- 1 count of Introduction of Contraband to a Detention Facility
- 2 counts of Sale and Delivery of Narcotics
Ammon, was already on probation, has now been charged with:
- 1 count of Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Communications Device
- 1 count of Introduction of Contraband to a Detention Facility
- 2 counts of Sale and Delivery of Narcotics
