Florida - Thursday January 26, 2023: Senator Linda Stewart (D – Orlando) and Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez (R – Miami Dade) have proposed a bill to require the teaching of Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) history in Florida's public schools.

Senate Bill 294 was sponsored by Sen. Rodriguez and co-sponsored by Sen. Stewart. The lawmakers say it is a bipartisan effort to educate students in AAPI history, and the community’s vital contributions to American society.

“Incorporating Asian studies in the classroom allows students to uncover fresh global perspectives.” Senator Rodriguez said “Through its culturally diverse and rich history, students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the Asian community.”

“I advocated for this legislation last year and I’m happy to collaborate with Senator Rodriguez to get this passed this session.” Said Stewart “It is necessary now more than ever to educate young people on different cultures given the Asian-American hate crimes that have been happening across the country, most recently with the mass shootings in California.”
