Florida - Wednesday February 7, 2023: Brightline resumes 79 mph speed testing of its passenger train in Indian River County "as Soon as" today, Wednesday February 8, according to a release from the passenger rail carrier.

The testing will span railroad crossings through Winter Beach, Gifford and Vero Beach. While the speed testing is underway flaggers will be present at the crossings along that corridor through Friday, February 10 at 7 p.m.

Brightline is integrating a new second passenger railroad track into the existing east coast freight rail corridor. The work is known as 'signal and track cutover' and involves testing a new rail signal system, as well as speed tests. Once the second track is commissioned, rail traffic could run on both tracks in either direction.

Residents should be alert, follow the law around active railroad tracks, and railroad crossings. Failure to follow the law could result in fines, points on your license, or loss of life.

Safety reminders:

  • Be vigilant around railroad tracks and crossings
  • Stay off the tracks and don’t stop on the tracks
  • Never go around crossing gates
  • Don’t try to beat a train
  • Only cross the tracks at a designated crossing
  • Look, Listen, Live
