SEBASTIAN — A 16-year-old girl died after falling through a hole in the roof of an abandoned four-story building in Sebastian, according to the Indian River County Sheriff's Office.
Indian River County Sheriff's deputies and fire rescue personnel responded at about 10:35 p.m. Aug. 8 to 9846 River Preserve Drive after a 911 call reported that a teenage girl had fallen from a concrete structure and was critically injured.
Deputies found a group of juveniles and the injured teen on the second floor of the building, the Sheriff's Office said. Investigators determined the group had been trespassing on the property and was on the roof when the teen fell through a hole, dropping about 29 feet to the floor below.
One of the juveniles knew CPR and immediately began life-saving measures, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The teen was flown to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where she died a short time later.
The Sheriff's Office said Criminal Investigations detectives are investigating and that, at this time, all evidence indicates the fall was an accident. The teen's identity was not released.
The Sheriff's Office initially provided an incorrect address for the property and later corrected it to 9846 River Preserve Drive. The property has been abandoned since 2007 and may not plot on maps, according to the correction.
The Sheriff's Office said the structures can be found near 99th Street and U.S. Highway 1, east of the highway along the river.
