FORT PIERCE — Fort Pierce police arrested a 34-year-old man Aug. 12 in connection with a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a 7-year-old child.

Demetris Johnson was arrested at 2905 U.S. Highway 1 and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury and driving while his license was suspended, according to the Fort Pierce Police Department.

The crash occurred at about 8:55 p.m. Aug. 1 at the intersection of North 25th Street and Avenue M. Two children were crossing the road in a marked crosswalk when Johnson struck one of them, police said.

Surveillance video from a nearby business captured the crash and showed Johnson getting out of his vehicle to check on the children before returning to his vehicle and leaving the scene, according to police.

Investigators identified the suspect vehicle using investigative technology and law enforcement databases, which also helped them identify Johnson as the driver, police said.

The 7-year-old victim has been released from the hospital and is recovering.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information about the crash can contact the Fort Pierce Police Department at 772-462-6800 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at www.tcwatch.org.
